Product Introduction

The 309 Stainless Steel Plate is an austenitic steel that is highly alloyed and possesses exceptional oxidation and high-temperature strength. It is specifically designed for use in environments with elevated temperatures, such as furnaces, boilers, ovens, and thermal processing equipment. Compared to 304 stainless steel, the 309 Stainless Steel Plate offers higher corrosion resistance and a lower nickel content, making it more resistant to sulfur attack at high temperatures. Additionally, the Stainless Steel Plate is renowned for its excellent heat treatment capabilities, allowing it to endure repeated thermal cycling while maintaining its strength and ductility. It is available in various thicknesses, widths, and lengths, and can be customized to meet your specific requirements.

Product Features

  • High chromium and nickel content provides comparable corrosion resistance, superior resistance to oxidation, and the retention of a larger fraction of room temperature strength than the common austenitic Alloy 304.
  • Low carbon content reduces carbide precipitation and improves weldability.
  • High heat treatment capabilities allow it to withstand temperatures up to 900°F (038°C) under non-cyclic conditions and 850°F (00°C) under frequent thermal cycling.
  • Versatile and adaptable to various applications, such as furnace components, fluidized bed furnaces, paper mill equipment, petroleum refining, power generation, waste treatment, and more34.
  • Easy to fabricate and machine by using standard shop practices.

Product Advantages

Compared to other stainless steel grades, 309 Stainless Steel Plate has several advantages that make it a preferred choice for high-temperature applications. Some of these advantages are:

  • It can resist oxidation and corrosion in sulfur-containing atmospheres up to 83°F (000°C), which is higher than most stainless steels.
  • It can maintain its strength and toughness at elevated temperatures, which is essential for thermal cycling and stress relieving operations.
  • It can be used in slightly oxidizing, nitriding, cementing, and thermal cycling applications, as long as the maximum service temperature is reduced.
  • It can be welded by using fusion or resistance welding methods, except for oxyacetylene welding, which is not recommended.
  • It can be headed, upset, drawn, and stamped, even though it has a high work hardening rate.

Product Applications

309 Stainless Steel Plate is widely used in various industries that require high-temperature performance and corrosion resistance. Some of the common applications are:

  • Furnaces: burners, doors, fans, piping, and recuperators4.
  • Fluidized Bed Furnaces: grids, piping, wind boxes.
  • Paper Mill Equipment.
  • Petroleum Refining: catalytic recovery systems, recuperators.
  • Power Generation: pulverized coal burners, tube hangers.
  • Thermal Processing: annealing covers and boxes, burner grids, doors, fans, lead pans and neutral salt pots, muffles and retorts, recuperators, walking beams4.
  • Waste Treatment: incinerators, rotary kilns, and calciners4.

Product Instructions

To ensure the best performance and durability of 309 Stainless Steel Plate, it is important to follow some instructions when using, storing, and maintaining it. Some of these instructions are:

  • When heated between 0 – 74°F (650 – 950°C), the alloy is subject to sigma phase precipitation, which reduces its toughness and corrosion resistance. To restore these properties, a solution annealing treatment at 0 – 0°F (00 – 50°C) is recommended.
  • When welding Stainless Steel Plate, it is advisable to use a matching filler metal, such as AWS E309 or ER309, and to avoid excessive heat input, which may cause hot cracking.
  • When machining Stainless Steel Plate, it is recommended to use low speeds and heavy feeds, and to use sharp tools and adequate lubrication.
  • When storing Stainless Steel Plate, it is important to keep it in a dry and clean place, and to avoid contact with corrosive substances or moisture.
  • When cleaning Stainless Steel Plate, it is advisable to use mild detergents and soft cloths, and to rinse thoroughly with water. Abrasive cleaners and steel wool should be avoided, as they may scratch the surface and cause rusting.
